Carlos Calvo grew up surrounded by world-famous flamenco and classical guitarists. He was formally trained at Carnegie Hall to play Bach and Barrios, but has been equally influenced by The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Rolling Stones.
Before embarking on his solo career, Carlos fronted successful bands that toured with Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and Willie Porter. As a solo artist, he has toured with The Bacon Brothers and Colin Hay and numerous times in Europe as a headliner. He has placed original songs in major motion pictures (She’s All That, Finding Holden).
Calvo is a sought-after session musician. He played guitar on the score of King of the Hill for three seasons, and has recorded numerous tracks for commercials, up-and-coming bands, and a session playing classical guitar with members of the L.A. Philharmonic. Carlos has most recently begun to work alongside composer Kurt Farquhar on scores for The Neighborhood and DC Comics’ Black Lightning.
Often called Hollywood’s Guitar Teacher to the Stars, Carlos regularly coaches actors to portray musicians; most notably for TV’s Californication and Ray Donovan, the Muddy Waters character in the film, Who Do You Love?, and the recent James Brown biopic Get On Up. Carlos teaches guitar privately and counts many of Hollywood’s A-list and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine as students.
Carlos’ independently recorded and released debut CD, Past Present Future, was named one of Los Angeles Music Connection Magazine's top 25 releases of 2002. Carlos’ second album, Further Down The Line features his very original brand of Alternative Folk/Pop mixing up acoustic-based performances with a full band electric feel and sophisticated songwriting.
Additionally, Carlos is part of a writing/production team with former Capitol Records Studios engineer Paul Smith. They are currently producing, recording, and writing with several bands and solo artists in the Los Angeles area, helping these artists to realize their musical visions.
Another of Calvo’s collaborations is with actor Rob Morrow, best known for his starring roles in TV’s Northern Exposure and Num3ers. Carlos and Rob co-write all the music for this project, and have had one of their songs featured in an episode of the television series The Fosters. For live performances Carlos assumes the role of Lead Guitarist and Musical Director, and Morrow is the frontman of The Rob Morrow Band featuring Carlos Calvo.
Carlos has co-created The Jack Daniels Songbook, which is the name of a rocking house band and it’s carefully curated repertoire. The band of seasoned professionals performs at events held by the iconic whiskey maker, many of which are held at Jack Daniel’s exclusive private event space in Los Angeles.
The ALS Association Golden West Chapter’s mission is to discover treatments and cures for ALS, and to serve, advocate for and empower people affected by ALS so they can live their lives to the fullest.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a fatal neurodegenerative illness that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Everything we do advances the search for effective treatments and cures for ALS. The Chapter currently serves more than 1,700 people with ALS and their families in 31 counties in California and the state of Hawaii.
Proceeds from Champions for Care and a Cure will provide critical funding for The ALS Association Golden West Chapter’s mission priorities in the areas of care services, public policy, and cutting edge ALS research—all of which are essential to achieving our vision: creating a world without ALS.
